17 Failed banks in 2008

Update: This list increased to 19 banks since the original post. See the FDIC's list here for the latest data. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. has listed 17 failed banks since January 1, 2008.
How high would this number be had the Fed and the Treasury not stepped in?

  1. Probably a lot higher and well-run ones would be caught up in the mix, I bet. Don't you just love the names of these? When living in No. Cal., we watched as four separate banks formed and tried to come up with names that stood out. Have an account at WaMu and there was hardly a ripple in the takeover. Business as usual and not much of the Chase name in sight!
